Join One of the UK’s Most Advanced Manufacturing Centres. The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) is a world‑leading research and development organisation, home to cutting‑edge technologies and some of the brightest engineering minds in global manufacturing. At the MTC, you’ll work with state‑of‑the‑art equipment in a collaborative, future‑focused environment, supporting innovation across aerospace, automotive, energy, rail and more. We support hundreds of industrial partners and play a vital role in advancing the UK’s manufacturing capabilities through research, training, technology development and world-class production support. We’re looking for a skilled Advanced CNC Technician to support our subtractive manufacturing processes—from job request through to the delivery of precision‑engineered components. You’ll work closely with Manufacturing Engineers, contribute technical expertise during feasibility reviews, and take full ownership of CNC programming, setting and operating tasks. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a high‑variety, low‑volume environment using advanced multi‑axis CNC equipment, machining a wide range of materials including steels, aluminium and exotic alloys.
Job Responsibility:
Program, set and operate 2‑axis and multi‑axis CNC lathes to manufacture precision components across various materials
Create or edit CNC programs using Siemens ShopTurn and DMG Mori controls (or be willing to learn if you use other conversational/ISO controls)
Select tooling, optimise cutting parameters and implement robust machining processes
Accurately interpret engineering drawings including GD&T, tolerances and surface finish requirements
Perform in‑process inspection using micrometers, Verniers, bore gauges and other precision tools
Troubleshoot machining challenges such as tool wear, chatter, workholding issues and tolerance drift
Maintain safe workshop practices and contribute to continuous improvement
Mentor apprentices and support less experienced machinists
Requirements:
Apprenticeship‑trained or equivalent hands‑on experience in precision CNC machining
Strong competence in setting/operating 2‑ and 3‑axis CNC lathes to tight tolerances
Ability to create/edit CNC programs using Siemens ShopTurn or similar controls
Excellent drawing interpretation skills including GD&T
Confident use of precision measuring instruments
Strong troubleshooting capability and sound machining judgment
Effective communication and teamwork skills
Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement
