Job Description:

Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced and motivated Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) to join our Surgical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service. This role is central to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care for individuals presenting with acute surgical conditions, with a focus on rapid assessment, diagnosis, and same-day management. The post holder will work autonomously within their scope of practice, supported by the surgical multidisciplinary team, to assess and manage patients referred to SDEC. You will play a key role in facilitating admission avoidance, improving patient flow, and ensuring timely clinical decision-making in a fast-paced environment. Job Responsibility:

  • Delivering high-quality, patient-centred care for individuals presenting with acute surgical conditions, with a focus on rapid assessment, diagnosis, and same-day management
  • Working autonomously within scope of practice to assess and manage patients referred to SDEC
  • Facilitating admission avoidance, improving patient flow, and ensuring timely clinical decision-making
  • Taking comprehensive histories, performing advanced clinical examinations, and formulating differential diagnoses
  • Requesting and interpreting investigations such as blood tests and imaging
  • Initiating treatment plans, including prescribing medications, and determining appropriate pathways
  • Performing clinical procedures within scope of practice
  • Ensuring safe, effective, and evidence-based care
  • Contributing to coordinated and efficient patient flow
  • Supporting the ongoing development of the SDEC service
  • Participating in audit and quality improvement initiatives
  • Contributing to the supervision, teaching, and support of junior colleagues and learners

Requirements:

  • Experience at working at band 7 level or equivalent in an surgical setting
  • Evidence of recent teaching, mentorship and supervision of staff
  • Evidence of involvement in change management
  • Evidence of continuing professional development, innovation and implementation of successful change management initiatives
  • Broad range of clinical expertise and experience in emergency care setting
  • Experience of undertaking research and audit processes
  • Clear understanding of acute performance targets, key performance indicators and ability to identify opportunities to improve service delivery
  • Evidence of commitment to developing the Surgical ACP service
  • Evidence of service improvement and change
  • Professional Registration: NMC/Paramedic/other allied health professional
  • Masters Qualification in Advanced Clinical Practice
  • Advanced Physical Assessment qualification (MSc Level)
  • Registered V300 Independent prescribing qualification
  • Chest Radiographic Interpretation Qualification (Msc Level)
  • Maintain professional portfolio
  • Advanced Resuscitation (ALS)
  • Leadership/Management course
  • Teaching/Mentorship Qualification
  • Demonstrate understanding of current developments in the specialty
  • Knowledge of current NHS, Professional and educational issues
  • Knowledge of current Advanced Clinical Practice policy and framework drivers
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and risk assessment/management
  • Knowledge of infection control issues
  • Knowledge and understanding of statutory and professional requirements
  • Knowledge of Trust policies and procedures
  • Awareness of confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently in surgical same day care across the acuity spectrum
  • Proven ability and competence with regard to interventional skills expected at middle grade medical clinical level
  • Evidence of both theoretical skills and practical skills and competency in all aspects of patient management
  • Ability to influence within the organisation through demonstration of excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to lead a team
  • Ability to motivate all members of the MDT through demonstration of excellent interpersonal skills
