The ADHD Specialist GP plays a pivotal role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care within Psychiatry UK’s ADHD service. Reporting to the Titration Team Lead and working in close collaboration with Consultant Psychiatrists, the postholder is responsible for the treatment and ongoing management of adults with ADHD, including the independent or supplementary prescribing of ADHD medication in accordance with national guidance and Psychiatry UK clinical policies. Clinical supervision is provided by the ADHD Clinical Leadership team. The ADHD Specialist GP will exercise a high level of autonomous clinical judgement to initiate, titrate, and monitor treatment, evaluate therapeutic effectiveness, manage clinical risk, and ensure safe and effective prescribing, while consistently upholding professional, ethical, and governance standards. Through collaborative multidisciplinary working, the role contributes to service development, clinical governance, and quality improvement, supporting Psychiatry UK’s commitment to innovation and excellence in mental healthcare. This is a home-based role (applicants must be UK-resident), with occasional travel required for face-to-face meetings at various locations across the UK.
Job Responsibility:
Deliver safe, effective, and evidence-based prescribing for adults with ADHD, in line with NICE guidance, Psychiatry UK clinical policies, and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Prescribing Framework
Manage a defined caseload of patients throughout titration and ongoing treatment, ensuring timely review of treatment response, side effects, adherence, and physical health parameters
Communicate with patients via Psychiatry UK’s secure digital portal, providing clear, supportive, and clinically appropriate responses to medication-related queries
Complete End of Titration Reviews (EOTRs) and undertake annual medication reviews in a timely, thorough, and patient-centred manner
Exercise independent or supplementary prescribing rights within scope of practice, recognising professional limitations and seeking senior clinical advice when required
Provide clinical support and guidance to fellow prescribers, particularly in relation to physical health co-morbidities
Work collaboratively with Consultant Psychiatrists and the wider ADHD multidisciplinary team
Undertake regular risk assessments and review safeguarding concerns, escalating appropriately
Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and confidential clinical records using Psychiatry UK’s digital systems
Participate in audit, quality improvement initiatives, and prescribing reviews to support clinical governance and service development
Engage in regular clinical supervision, peer support, and team learning
Contribute to the ongoing development of Psychiatry UK’s prescribing pathways, titration protocols, and service delivery models
Support the delivery of internal and external education and training sessions
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, prescribing guidance, and organisational policies
Requirements:
GMC-registered General Practitioner with a valid licence to practise in the UK with 1-2 years post CCT experience as a GP
Sound understanding of ADHD management or willingness to undertake training
Experience working with patients with chronic physical and mental health diagnosis and complex medical needs
Demonstrable clinical experience in the assessment and management of ADHD in adults
Strong patient-centred approach, with the ability to show empathy, professionalism, and to build and sustain effective therapeutic relationships
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Proficient in the use of ADHD rating scales, validated screening and outcome-monitoring tools
Clear understanding of safeguarding responsibilities, particularly within remote and digital models of care
Sound understanding of relevant legislation, professional standards, and current developments in ADHD services and prescribing practice
Ability to work autonomously, safely, and efficiently while managing an independent caseload
Strong IT and digital literacy skills and confidence in using digital health platforms
Nice to have:
Experience with titration and long-term management of stimulant and non-stimulant ADHD medications
Understanding of clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement processes related to prescribing
Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and risk assessment in mental health and remote care settings
