An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Physician in Acute Medicine to join a progressive and forward-thinking Acute Medicine team in Scotland. This role offers an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic physician with an interest in: Acute Medicine service redesign; Quality improvement; Medical education; Ambulatory care development; Leadership and innovation within acute services. The successful candidate will join a supportive team of consultants within a modern district general hospital, contributing to the ongoing development of the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) and Ambulatory Care services. Flexible working arrangements and part-time opportunities are available.
Job Responsibility:
Provide consultant-led care within the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) and Medical Assessment Unit (MAU)
Conduct: Daily patient reviews
Acute medical assessments
Ambulatory care reviews
Consultant ward rounds
Support patient flow and admission avoidance pathways
Work collaboratively with Emergency Department teams to improve acute patient management
Provide telephone advice to General Practitioners regarding acute patient management
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and board rounds
Contribute to the development of Same Day Emergency Care and ambulatory pathways
Participation in the General Medicine on-call rota
Support the redesign and development of Acute Medicine services
Help improve patient pathways and departmental flow
Contribute to quality improvement initiatives
Participate in governance, audit, and clinical effectiveness projects
Supervise and support Foundation doctors, GP trainees, Core Medical Trainees, and Specialty Registrars
Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
Contribute to educational meetings, simulation training, and departmental learning activities
Support appraisal, mentoring, and professional development of junior staff
Requirements:
Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
MRCP or equivalent qualification
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Acute Medicine or General Internal Medicine (GIM) OR within 6 months of CCT at the interview date
Minimum 1 year NHS experience
Strong clinical competence in Acute and General Internal Medicine
Experience managing acute medical admissions and emergencies
Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
Excellent communication and leadership skills
Nice to have:
CCT/CESR in Acute Medicine
Higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc)
Experience in: Service redesign
Simulation training
Clinical leadership
Audit and quality improvement
Research publications or teaching qualifications
Interest in developing speciality services within Acute Medicine
