An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a large, forward-thinking NHS organisation in South East England. This role sits within a dynamic Acute Medicine service focused on delivering high-quality, efficient, and patient-centred care through the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU) and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) pathways. The service is undergoing significant development and expansion, offering excellent opportunities for leadership, innovation, education, and service redesign. The successful candidate will contribute to a consultant-led service, working collaboratively across specialities to ensure timely assessment, management, and discharge of acute medical patients.
Job Responsibility:
Provide clinical and administrative leadership for the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU)
Manage acute medical admissions, including triage, assessment, and decision-making for admission, short-stay care, or discharge
Support and further develop Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) pathways to optimise patient flow and reduce unnecessary admissions
Develop and implement clinical protocols and pathways in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams
Ensure safe, high-quality, and efficient patient care from initial assessment through to discharge or admission
Lead effective handover processes and speciality triage within the acute medical service
Provide supervision, mentorship, and training to junior doctors and multidisciplinary team members
Contribute actively to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes
Participate in clinical governance, including audit, quality improvement, and risk management activities
Collaborate with emergency medicine, geriatrics, diagnostics, and community services to deliver integrated care pathways
Provide advice to primary care colleagues regarding patient admissions and management
Participate in the consultant on-call rota and contribute to service delivery across acute medicine
Requirements:
MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise
MRCP or equivalent postgraduate qualification
CCT in General Internal Medicine with sub-speciality training in Acute Medicine (or equivalent CESR)
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at interview
Extensive experience in Acute Medicine, including management of high-volume emergency admissions
Competency in invasive procedures relevant to acute medical care
Experience in audit, quality improvement, and/or research leading to service change
Experience in supervising and training junior medical staff
Experience working within NHS systems and acute care pathways
Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
Strong clinical leadership and decision-making skills in acute care settings
Ability to lead and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
Excellent communication skills with patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals
Ability to manage complex clinical scenarios and prioritise workload effectively
Strong organisational and service development capabilities
Commitment to teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
Participation in clinical audit and governance activities
Understanding of research principles and evidence-based practice
Commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care
