The Activity Aide is responsible for aiding with the development and coordination of programs and services that meet the needs of residents. This position assists in maintaining a safe and secure environment for residents, visitors and other staff members. All duties are performed in the best interest of the residents and their families, and in accordance with Spring Living's vision, mission and values statements.
Job Responsibility:
Assists with the development and preparation of communication tools (newsletters, posters, notices, calendars, etc.) designed to provide residents, seniors located outside of our retirement residence and volunteers, with information regarding current and future activities and special events
Responds to resident or family member concerns and ensures appropriate action is taken within decision-making authority and/or brings to the attention of the Lifestyle and Program Manager
Creates a safe, pleasant, creative and non-threatening recreational environment
Develops and maintains effective interpersonal relationships with residents and other staff members
Recruits residents to participate in programs
Effectively communicates and interacts with residents, family members, visitors and volunteers in a courteous and professional manner
Conducts duties in accordance with Spring Living policies and procedures, as well as, government regulations, laws and policies
Understands and follows all health and safety policies and procedures. Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, other staff members and residents. Promptly reports all actual or potentially hazardous situations
Maintains confidentiality of resident's personal information
Monitors and documents resident participation in activities, and reports any changes in activity levels
Performs other related duties as required
Requirements:
One to three years' related experience in a retirement residence or health care environment is preferred
Customer service experience required
Graduate of a post-secondary education program relating to recreation, gerontology or social work, or demonstrated related experience
Knowledge of risk management issues
Ability to plan, organize, and direct the delivery of diverse social services and volunteer programs
Ability to multi-task
Must be able to read, write, and verbally communicate effectively in English
Customer service oriented
Ability to maintain effective interpersonal and team relationships
Conflict resolution skills
Demonstrates empathy and understanding of the needs of seniors
Creative/lateral thinker
Computer literate with knowledge of related software programs
Possesses an understanding of the aging process
Demonstrates an appreciation and understanding of the background and needs of individual residents
Must possess a valid (province specific) drivers license
Current First Aid Certificate is an asset
Wears personal protective equipment (or clothing) as required by task, MSDS, or residence policy
Must be available for flexible shifts based on needs of residents and the site (including weekends and evenings)
Must be prepared to respond to emergency situations
Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Persons Check required
