We are looking for an experienced Accounts Payable/Payroll Manager to support a university environment in Canandaigua, New York. This Contract position will lead key payroll and accounts payable activities while supervising a small team and helping strengthen day-to-day accounting operations. The ideal candidate brings strong judgment, a proactive work style, and the ability to improve processes with minimal oversight.
Job Responsibility:
Direct payroll and accounts payable functions to ensure timely, accurate processing and compliance with internal policies
Oversee a payroll specialist and an accounts payable clerk, providing guidance, workload coordination, and day-to-day support
Review invoice coding, payment documentation, and disbursement activity, including check runs and ACH transactions
Monitor payroll processing activities and resolve discrepancies to maintain reliable employee payments and reporting
Identify workflow inefficiencies and implement practical process improvements that increase accuracy and operational efficiency
Partner with finance and accounting staff to support related accounting activities and maintain smooth cross-functional coordination
Utilize Ellucian Banner/Colleague or comparable systems to manage payroll and accounts payable records and reporting
Assist with operational continuity during departmental changes by maintaining organized processes and dependable execution
Requirements:
At least 3 years of experience in accounting, payroll, accounts payable, or a closely related finance leadership role
Demonstrated background managing accounts payable operations, including invoice review, coding, payment processing, and ACH activity
Hands-on payroll experience with automated payroll systems
Prior experience supervising staff and coordinating daily work within a finance or accounting function
Ability to work independently, take initiative, and drive improvements without extensive direction
Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage deadlines, resolve issues, and maintain accurate financial records
Nice to have:
Experience in Ellucian Banner/Colleague is helpful but not required
Experience working in higher education or another similarly structured organization is preferred
