Job Description

Robert Half is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager for our client in the education industry in San Diego, CA. This role is ideal for an accounting professional with experience overseeing daily accounting operations, managing month-end close, supervising staff, and supporting financial reporting and compliance. The ideal candidate is analytical, organized, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment while supporting the goals of a mission-driven organization.

Job Responsibility

  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger activity, reconciliations, and financial reporting
  • Manage month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
  • Review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules for accuracy and completeness
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance on workflow and performance
  • Prepare and review financial statements and management reports
  • Monitor internal controls and help ensure compliance with accounting policies and procedures
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis activities
  • Coordinate audit preparation and respond to internal and external audit requests
  • Collaborate with leadership and cross-functional teams to improve accounting processes and reporting efficiency
  • Assist with special projects and system or process enhancements as needed

Requirements

  • 5+ years of accounting experience, including leadership or supervisory responsibilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, financial reporting, reconciliations, and month-end close
  • Experience supervising staff and improving accounting workflows
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines
  • CPA or CPA-track is a plus

Nice to have

  • Experience working in education, nonprofit education, higher education, or related organizations
  • Familiarity with fund tracking, restricted funding, grant reporting, or departmental budgeting is a plus
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance, audit support, and financial reporting in education environments is helpful
  • Experience with systems such as Microsoft D365, Oracle NetSuite, QuickBooks, SAP, Workday, or similar platforms
  • Familiarity with accounting controls and software proficiency aligned with current hiring needs

  • Assist with year-end compliance activities, including 1099 preparation, sales tax support, and other required governmental filings.
