We are looking for a diligent and detail-oriented Accounting Assistant to join a non-profit organization on a contract basis in Sacramento, California. This role is focused on supporting the Finance Department by creating a comprehensive Financial Policies and Procedures Manual tailored for nonprofit operations. The position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit financial management, including compliance with grant requirements, donor-restricted funds, and regulatory standards.
Job Responsibility:
Observe and document financial workflows by shadowing key finance personnel, including the CFO, Accounts Payable Specialist, and Accounts Receivable Specialist
Draft detailed procedures covering accounts payable, accounts receivable, grant billing, fund accounting, budget monitoring, and financial reporting
Create visual aids such as flowcharts and process maps to represent financial operations effectively
Document internal controls, segregation of duties, and compliance processes in alignment with nonprofit accounting standards
Collaborate with team members to ensure all documentation is clear, accurate, and user-friendly
Conduct interviews with finance staff to gather insights on financial workflows and address any process gaps
Maintain confidentiality while managing and documenting financial and donor-related information
Assist in preparing documentation for audits, grant compliance, and regulatory filings, including 1099 and Form 990 preparation
Organize and compile all written procedures into a comprehensive Financial Policies and Procedures Manual
Identify potential improvements and recommend enhancements to existing financial processes
Requirements:
Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Accounting, Finance, Nonprofit Management, or a related field
Familiarity with nonprofit accounting principles, including fund accounting and grant compliance, is preferred
Experience in documentation, technical writing, or process improvement is an advantage
Strong written communication skills to effectively translate complex processes into clear and concise documentation
Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
Understanding of internal controls and financial compliance standards
Ability to handle sensitive financial and donor information with discretion and professionalism
