We are looking for an Accountant to join a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles, California on a Contract basis. This role will contribute to daily accounting operations, support accurate financial reporting, and help maintain strong fiscal oversight across the organization. The ideal candidate brings hands-on accounting experience, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a mission-driven environment.
Job Responsibility:
Record financial activity in the general ledger and create journal entries that support accurate month-to-month reporting
Contribute to monthly and annual close activities by organizing account data, reviewing transactions, and helping finalize reporting packages
Reconcile banking activity and key balance sheet accounts to ensure records remain complete and accurate
Handle accounts payable and accounts receivable tasks, including invoice coding, payment support, and follow-up on outstanding items
Monitor grant-related activity, restricted funding, and donor-designated balances to support proper tracking and reporting
Prepare financial statements, schedules, and supporting documentation for leadership review and external audit requests
Assist with budget planning and ongoing budget-to-actual monitoring to help identify variances and financial trends
Maintain organized accounting records and uphold internal control practices in alignment with nonprofit financial standards
Support audit preparation and assist with regulatory and tax-related filings, including documentation needed for Form 990
Collaborate with team members across finance and operations to address accounting questions and meet reporting deadlines
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field
At least 2 years of accounting experience
nonprofit exposure is preferred
Working knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, including fund or restricted grant tracking, is an advantage
Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger activity, journal entries, bank reconciliations, and invoice coding
Proficiency with accounting systems and strong Microsoft Excel skills
High level of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail in financial recordkeeping
Ability to prioritize competing assignments and complete work within established deadlines
Strong written and verbal communication skills with a collaborative approach to teamwork
