We are looking for an experienced Accountant to support government-focused financial operations in Charlotte, North Carolina. This Long-term Contract position will play a key role in grant oversight, project closeout, capital asset accounting, and year-end reporting while helping maintain accurate and compliant financial records. The ideal candidate brings strong knowledge of governmental accounting practices and can work effectively across departments, with external stakeholders, and during audit activities.
Job Responsibility:
Lead the financial closeout of capital and operating projects by reviewing transactions, confirming compliance, and ensuring completion within established timelines
Reconcile funding activity across federal, state, and local grants, including expenditure review, balance monitoring, and preparation of supporting documentation
Contribute to capital asset accounting by maintaining records for acquisitions, disposals, and related reconciliations
Support annual closing activities through preparation of schedules, account reconciliations, and audit-ready documentation
Participate in organizational system implementation efforts by assisting with testing, validating results, and documenting accounting processes
Prepare and maintain financial reports, schedules, and accounting records in alignment with applicable standards and grant requirements
Partner with internal teams, outside agencies, and auditors to provide financial information and resolve accounting-related questions
Recommend workflow improvements and support updates to accounting procedures to strengthen accuracy and efficiency
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
At least 5 years of accounting experience, ideally within government, public sector, or transit environments
Working knowledge of governmental accounting, grant administration, and project-based accounting practices
Experience with capital asset tracking and support for year-end close activities
Familiarity with enterprise financial systems
prior implementation support experience is preferred
Strong Excel skills with the ability to analyze data, perform reconciliations, and prepare reports
Effective communication and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines
Background supporting federal or state grant compliance in a municipality or public transportation setting is preferred
