We are looking for a skilled Accountant to join our team in Washington, District of Columbia, on a long-term contract basis. This role is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a strong background in nonprofit accounting, fund management, and financial reporting. The position offers a chance to contribute to meaningful work while utilizing expertise in general ledger activities, donor-designated funds, and financial compliance.
Job Responsibility:
Manage daily accounting tasks, ensuring all transactions are accurately recorded and comply with nonprofit best practices
Prepare, review, and post detailed journal entries while maintaining adherence to organizational and regulatory guidelines
Oversee the month-end close process, including accruals, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, including invoices, payments, and donor receipts
Conduct bank and account reconciliations to maintain data accuracy and integrity
Collaborate on audits and reporting requirements, providing necessary documentation and insights
Apply fund accounting principles to track restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring proper allocation and reporting
Work closely with internal teams to deliver financial insights and ensure compliance with grant requirements
Identify opportunities to enhance processes and strengthen internal controls
Utilize nonprofit accounting software and tools such as Sage Intacct and Excel to support daily operations
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience
At least 2–4 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within nonprofit or fund/grant management settings
Strong proficiency in accrual accounting, journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and reconciliations
In-depth knowledge of fund accounting, including the management of restricted funds
Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills
Familiarity with nonprofit accounting software such as Sage Intacct and advanced Microsoft Excel skills
Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and adapt to dynamic work environments
