Lawes Consulting is proud to be supporting a respected insurer in the search for an Accident & Health Underwriter to join their specialist team. This role offers an excellent opportunity for experienced A&H professionals or underwriters from other commercial lines who are eager to pivot into the growing and dynamic world of personal accident, health, and travel-related risk. The successful candidate will underwrite a varied portfolio, contribute to business development, and help shape the future of this niche product line.

Job Responsibility:

  • Underwrite new and renewal Accident & Health business across personal, group, and corporate schemes
  • Assess risks including accident, travel, medical expenses, and related covers
  • Price risks within authority, ensuring profitability and underwriting discipline
  • Liaise with brokers and intermediaries to build and maintain strong relationships
  • Assist in the development of new products and market propositions
  • Ensure adherence to internal governance and regulatory standards
  • Manage a personal underwriting caseload across A&H products
  • Respond to broker enquiries, provide quotes, and negotiate terms
  • Work collaboratively with underwriting, claims, and pricing teams
  • Support the delivery of team and regional performance targets
  • Monitor market trends and competitor activity in the A&H space

Requirements:

  • Experience in A&H underwriting is ideal but not essential
  • Open to candidates from other lines (e.g., property, casualty, liability) with a strong desire to move into A&H
  • Understanding of broker distribution, especially within UK commercial or specialty markets
  • Familiarity with group schemes or employee benefits is a plus
  • Strong risk assessment and decision-making skills
  • Commercially focused with the ability to negotiate effectively
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Detail-oriented with sound technical understanding
  • Proactive and adaptable mindset, open to learning and development
