Job Description:

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate 1:1 Support Assistant to work with a Year 8 student with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in a secondary school setting. The successful candidate will provide tailored support to help the student access the curriculum, develop independence, and thrive within the school environment. This role would suit someone with Special Educational Needs (SEN) training or qualifications and previous experience supporting students within a secondary school.

Job Responsibility:

  • Provide individualised in-class support to a student
  • Assist the student in accessing lessons and completing learning activities
  • Support the development of social, emotional, and communication skills
  • Implement strategies outlined in the student’s EHCP and support plans
  • Work closely with teachers, SENCO, and pastoral staff to monitor progress and adapt support strategies
  • Help manage transitions between lessons and support the student during less structured times if required
  • Encourage independence, confidence, and positive behaviour

Requirements:

  • Experience working in a secondary school environment
  • SEN qualification or relevant training (e.g., Teaching Assistant qualification, autism training)
  • Experience supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or other additional needs
  • Understanding of SEN strategies and inclusive classroom practices

Nice to have:

  • Experience working with students with EHCPs
  • Knowledge of behaviour support strategies and structured support approaches
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to build positive relationships with young people
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
