About the Technical Author role

A career in technical authoring offers a unique blend of writing precision and engineering insight. Technical Author jobs involve translating complex, specialized information—from engineering schematics and system specifications to operational procedures and safety protocols—into clear, accessible documentation for diverse audiences. Professionals in this role act as critical bridges between subject matter experts and end-users, ensuring that technical data is not only accurate but also usable.

The core responsibilities of a Technical Author typically include researching and gathering information from engineers, designers, and project managers; analyzing technical data to understand system functions and sequences; and then structuring, writing, and editing documents such as maintenance instructions, user manuals, method statements, risk assessments, and inspection reports. A significant part of the work involves planning the logical flow of information, refining illustrations or diagrams, and ensuring all documentation adheres to industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company content management systems (CMS). Beyond writing, these professionals often proofread and copy-edit the work of colleagues, manage document version control, and support project teams by contributing to technical meetings and responding to technical inquiries.

To succeed in Technical Author jobs, individuals typically need a strong foundation in engineering or a related technical field, often demonstrated by an ONC, HNC, or equivalent qualification. Essential skills include excellent verbal and non-verbal communication, strong interpersonal abilities for liaising with stakeholders, and a keen eye for detail. Proficiency with standard office tools like Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is a baseline requirement, while experience with specialized authoring tools (such as Arbortext, 3D Cortona, or Articulate) and structured data management within a CMS is highly valued. The ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical theories, organize and prioritize workloads independently, and deliver accurate work on schedule are crucial traits.

This profession demands a proactive, resourceful approach and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Whether working in energy, manufacturing, aerospace, or software, Technical Authors ensure that safety, compliance, and operational efficiency are supported by high-quality documentation. Ultimately, this role is ideal for those who enjoy deep-diving into technical subjects and have a passion for making complex information understandable and actionable for others.
