About the Teaching Assistant One To One role

A Teaching Assistant One To One job involves providing dedicated, individualized support to a specific student within a classroom setting. Unlike general classroom assistants who work with the entire group, these professionals focus exclusively on the academic, social, and emotional needs of a single pupil, often helping them to access the curriculum and navigate the school day. This role is critical in inclusive education, ensuring that every child, regardless of their learning challenges or disabilities, has the opportunity to thrive.

The primary responsibility in these jobs is to work directly with the assigned student, implementing strategies set by the class teacher and Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo). This includes breaking down complex tasks into manageable steps, adapting lesson materials to suit the child’s learning style, and providing one-to-one instruction during core subjects like literacy and numeracy. Beyond academics, the role involves significant pastoral care. Teaching assistants in this capacity help the student manage their behavior, build social skills, and regulate their emotions. They often accompany the child during break times, lunchtimes, and transitions between lessons to provide consistency and reassurance. Recording observations on the student’s progress and behavior is also a key duty, as this information informs future planning and reviews.

Typical skills required for these positions include immense patience, empathy, and resilience. Strong communication skills are essential, not only for interacting with the child but also for liaising effectively with teachers, parents, and external therapists. A practical understanding of various special educational needs—such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or speech and language difficulties—is highly beneficial. The ability to remain calm under pressure and to think creatively to engage a reluctant learner is often what sets a candidate apart.

Common requirements for Teaching Assistant One To One jobs include a minimum of a Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, though equivalent experience working with children in a school or care setting is frequently accepted. A thorough knowledge of safeguarding procedures is non-negotiable. Most employers also require a valid Enhanced DBS check and the ability to provide strong, recent references. While formal qualifications are valued, the most crucial attribute is a genuine passion for helping a child overcome barriers to learning. This role offers immense job satisfaction, as the assistant often becomes a pivotal figure in the student’s educational journey, directly contributing to their confidence, independence, and overall success. For those seeking a rewarding career in education that makes a tangible difference, exploring these dedicated support roles is an excellent step.
