About the Senior RF Systems Engineer role

A Senior RF Systems Engineer is a highly specialized technical leader responsible for the design, development, validation, and optimization of radio frequency (RF) systems used in a wide array of modern technologies. These professionals ensure that wireless communication, radar, sensing, and connectivity functions perform reliably across diverse environments. The role bridges theoretical electromagnetics with practical hardware engineering, making it critical for industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, defense, consumer electronics, automotive, and industrial IoT.

In this profession, typical responsibilities encompass the entire product lifecycle. Senior RF Systems Engineers define system architecture and translate high-level product requirements into detailed technical RF specifications. They select and characterize wireless chipsets, antennas, and front-end components, often working across frequency bands from sub-GHz to millimeter-wave (e.g., 400 MHz through 70 GHz). A core duty involves modeling, simulating, and testing RF circuits and subsystems to validate performance metrics like transmit power, receiver sensitivity, error vector magnitude (EVM), and spurious emissions. They lead the design of test plans, set up complex measurement environments using vector network analyzers (VNAs), spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and communication testers, and perform tests such as Total Isotropic Sensitivity (TIS), Total Radiated Power (TRP), Bit Error Rate (BER), and radiation pattern characterization.

Debugging and root-cause analysis of RF issues is a daily task. Senior engineers troubleshoot desense, interference, and coexistence problems in multi-radio environments, ensuring that Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, GPS, and proprietary protocols operate without degradation. They also advise mechanical and electrical teams on board layout, shielding, and enclosure design to preserve signal integrity. Collaboration with manufacturing partners and original design manufacturers (ODMs) is common, involving audits of design reviews, test reports, and qualification processes. Additionally, these engineers often develop automated test scripts to improve validation coverage and repeatability, and they participate in regulatory compliance testing for standards such as FCC, ETSI, and other international emission requirements.

Typical skills and requirements for Senior RF Systems Engineer jobs include a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, or a closely related field, along with 4–8+ years of progressive experience in RF design and validation. Deep expertise in modulation schemes (OFDM, QAM, GFSK, UWB), encoding methods, and antenna theory is essential. Proficiency with simulation tools (e.g., ADS, HFSS, CST) and laboratory equipment is mandatory. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities are crucial for tackling complex, ambiguous technical challenges. Communication skills are also important, as these engineers frequently present findings to cross-functional teams and write technical documentation. Ultimately, Senior RF Systems Engineers are the guardians of wireless performance, ensuring that products connect reliably, securely, and efficiently in an increasingly wireless world.
