About the Quantity Surveyor role

Explore the dynamic and rewarding world of Quantity Surveyor jobs, a cornerstone profession within the construction and infrastructure industries. A Quantity Surveyor (QS) is a highly skilled professional, often described as the financial and commercial manager of construction projects. Their primary role is to manage all aspects of the costing and contracts for building and engineering projects, ensuring they are completed within the legal, quality, and budgetary frameworks. This career is ideal for those with a sharp analytical mind, a passion for problem-solving, and a keen interest in the built environment.

The core responsibilities of a Quantity Surveyor are comprehensive and span the entire project lifecycle. During the pre-contract phase, they are instrumental in calculating preliminary project budgets through detailed cost planning and estimating. This involves analyzing project drawings and specifications to forecast the financial requirements. They also play a key role in procurement, advising clients on the best contracting strategies and preparing tender documents for contractors to bid on. A significant part of their work involves tender analysis, comparing bids and negotiating with contractors to secure the best value.

Once a project is underway, the post-contract phase begins. Here, the QS shifts to active cost management and contract administration. They are responsible for valuing completed work, certifying payments to contractors, and managing the project's cash flow. A critical function is managing change; they assess the cost implications of any variations to the original design or scope and negotiate these changes with all parties. They also identify and price potential risks and opportunities, ensuring the project's financial health is constantly monitored. At project completion, they handle the final account, settling all financial matters and resolving any contractual claims.

To excel in Quantity Surveyor jobs, individuals typically possess a blend of technical knowledge and soft skills. A foundational requirement is a bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or a related construction field. Many professionals also pursue chartered status with a professional body like the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), which is highly regarded and signifies a superior level of competence and ethics. Key skills include a strong understanding of construction methods and materials, proficiency with standard forms of contract (such as JCT or NEC), and expertise in measurement and cost estimation, often using specialized software. Beyond technical prowess, successful QSs are excellent communicators and negotiators, adept at building relationships with clients, contractors, and designers. They are highly organized, able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and possess a proactive, detail-oriented, and commercially astute mindset.

Whether you are an experienced professional or just starting your career, Quantity Surveyor jobs offer a challenging and stable career path with opportunities for growth across various sectors, including residential, commercial, industrial, and civil engineering. It is a profession central to the successful and profitable delivery of the world's construction projects.
