They lead equipment procurement, oversee installation and final acceptance testing (FAT), and validate processes through rigorous methodologies like Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA). The role extends into production support, where these engineers develop detailed work instructions, oversee first-article builds, and troubleshoot process deviations. They utilize statistical process control (SPC) to monitor weld quality and drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), yield enhancement, and cost reduction. Handing over fully validated and stable processes to operations teams is a key deliverable. Typical skills and requirements for these jobs include a bachelor’s degree in Weld Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Several years of hands-on experience in a high-volume manufacturing setting, preferably within automotive, electric vehicle (EV), or aerospace propulsion, is standard. Candidates must possess deep, practical knowledge of welding standards (e.g., AWS), metallurgy, and modern joining techniques. Proficiency in CAD software, structured problem-solving methods (like DMAIC, 8D), and an understanding of GD&T are essential. Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills are required to interface with cross-functional teams and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, regulated environment.
