Explore a wide range of Payroll/HRIS Specialist jobs and discover a dynamic career at the intersection of Human Resources and Information Technology. A Payroll/HRIS Specialist is a vital professional responsible for managing an organization's payroll operations while also administering and optimizing the Human Resources Information System (HRIS). This dual-focus role is critical for ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time, and that the technological backbone supporting all HR functions runs smoothly and efficiently. Professionals in this field are the gatekeepers of sensitive employee data and the architects of streamlined, automated HR processes. The typical responsibilities for a Payroll/HRIS Specialist are divided into two core areas. On the payroll side, this includes managing the complete payroll lifecycle for one or multiple pay cycles. This involves processing new hires, terminations, salary changes, bonuses, and deductions. A significant part of the role is ensuring strict compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations and wage and hour laws. Specialists are tasked with calculating and submitting payroll taxes, generating annual W-2 and 1095-C forms, and maintaining impeccable payroll records. They also act as a key point of contact for resolving employee inquiries regarding their pay. On the HRIS side, the specialist is the system expert. They are responsible for the daily maintenance, configuration, and security of the HRIS platform. This includes entering and auditing employee data, generating standard and custom reports for HR and management, and troubleshooting system issues. A crucial function is managing system upgrades and new releases, which involves testing new functionality, training end-users, and ensuring a seamless transition. They work to leverage the system's full capabilities to automate manual tasks, improve data integrity, and provide actionable insights through data analytics, thereby enhancing the overall strategic impact of the HR department. To succeed in Payroll/HRIS Specialist jobs, candidates typically need a blend of technical and soft skills. A strong foundational knowledge of multi-state payroll principles, tax regulations, and compliance requirements is essential. Technically, proficiency with HRIS platforms—such as UKG Pro, Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, or Oracle HCM—is highly valued. Key skills include advanced Excel proficiency for data analysis, a meticulous attention to detail to ensure absolute accuracy in payroll and data entry, and strong problem-solving abilities to diagnose and resolve system or payment discrepancies. Excellent organizational skills are paramount, as specialists often work under strict deadlines, particularly around pay periods and system updates. Most employers seek candidates with several years of experience in payroll processing and HRIS administration. If you are a detail-oriented problem-solver with a passion for data and processes, exploring Payroll/HRIS Specialist jobs could be the perfect next step in your career.
