About the O&m Site Technician II role

An O&M Site Technician II plays a critical role in the renewable energy sector, primarily focused on the ongoing operation, maintenance, and reliability of utility-scale power generation facilities. These professionals are the backbone of ensuring that solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems (BESS) operate at peak efficiency and safety standards. 5kV). The primary responsibility of an O&M Site Technician II is to perform a wide array of hands-on technical tasks, including preventative, reactive, and predictive maintenance. They are tasked with troubleshooting and repairing complex electrical equipment such as inverters, transformers, switchgear, and protective relays.

A significant portion of the role involves inspecting and maintaining solar PV panels, tracking mechanisms, and the associated wiring and combiner boxes. For facilities with battery storage, technicians also work on battery management systems and power conversion systems. Beyond electrical work, these technicians often maintain auxiliary systems like HVAC, security systems, lighting, and backup generators. A key daily activity is the use of specialized diagnostic tools, including digital multimeters (DMMs), insulation testers (meggers), and thermal imaging cameras to identify potential failures before they occur. Analyzing electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and equipment manuals is essential for accurate troubleshooting and repair.

Safety is paramount in this profession. Technicians must rigorously adhere to OSHA, NFPA, and company-specific safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and the consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). They are often required to prepare Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and conduct safety observations. To secure O&M Site Technician II jobs, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, with an associate degree or technical school certification being highly preferred. Relevant experience in electrical maintenance, industrial troubleshooting, or power plant operations is crucial.

Many positions require a state-issued electrician’s license. Strong knowledge of electrical theory, AC/DC circuits, and the ability to read technical schematics are non-negotiable. Physical fitness is important, as the job involves lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, and working in various outdoor weather conditions. A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are standard requirements, as daily travel to different project sites is common. This role offers a dynamic career path for those passionate about clean energy, combining hands-on technical skills with the critical responsibility of keeping the power grid reliable and sustainable.
