Common responsibilities for individuals in these jobs are extensive and varied. They typically include writing detailed technical reports that outline their findings, the cause of damage, and a comprehensive scope of repairs necessary to reinstate the property to its pre-damage condition. This often involves specifying and commissioning further specialist investigations, such as soil analysis or drainage surveys. They are also responsible for project managing the entire repair process. This includes preparing detailed specifications of work, obtaining competitive tenders from building contractors, and recommending a suitable contractor to the insurer and policyholder. Throughout the repair phase, they administer the building contract, conduct site visits to monitor progress, value work completed, authorize stage payments, and ensure all work complies with Building Regulations and Health & Safety legislation, including CDM regulations where applicable. A degree in a relevant discipline such as Building Surveying, Civil or Structural Engineering, or Construction is almost always essential.
