About the Head of Quality role

A Head of Quality is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic direction and operational excellence of an organization's entire quality management system. This executive position is critical across manufacturing, engineering, pharmaceuticals, automotive, aerospace, and many other industries where product integrity, safety, and customer satisfaction are paramount. Professionals seeking Head of Quality jobs are strategic thinkers who bridge the gap between high-level business objectives and granular process control, ensuring that quality is not just a department but a core company value embedded in every operation.

The core mission of a Head of Quality is to establish, maintain, and continuously improve a robust Quality Management System (QMS) that complies with relevant industry standards and regulations, such as ISO 9001, IATF 16949, or FDA guidelines. This involves developing and implementing overarching quality policies, procedures, and best practices. A significant part of the role is leadership and culture building: they mentor and develop a team of quality managers, engineers, and inspectors, fostering an organization-wide culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and proactive problem-solving. They are the ultimate champion for quality, reporting key performance indicators (KPIs) and quality metrics to senior management and the board.

Typical responsibilities for this profession are comprehensive. They oversee all aspects of product and process quality, from incoming materials inspection through in-process controls to final product release. They manage customer and supplier quality relationships, acting as the primary point of contact for major quality concerns, leading rigorous root cause analysis (RCA), and driving corrective and preventive actions (CAPA). The Head of Quality also spearheads audit programs, leading both internal audits and liaising with external certification bodies and customer auditors to ensure compliance. Furthermore, they are deeply involved in new product development, guiding teams through Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) and production part approval processes (PPAP) to ensure quality is designed in from the start.

The skills and requirements for Head of Quality jobs are demanding. Candidates typically possess a bachelor's degree in engineering, science, or a related technical field, with many holding advanced degrees or professional certifications like Six Sigma Black Belt, ASQ Certified Quality Manager, or Chartered Quality Institute membership. Extensive experience (often 10+ years) in quality management within a relevant industry is essential, with a proven track record of building and leading teams. They must have an expert understanding of quality principles, statistical process control (SPC), risk management, and relevant regulatory landscapes. Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, and leadership skills are non-negotiable, as the role requires influencing at all levels of the organization to drive change and uphold the highest standards of excellence.
