About the Functional Skills Tutor role

Functional Skills Tutor jobs represent a vital and rewarding career path within the education and training sector, focused on equipping learners with the essential practical abilities in English, mathematics, and digital skills needed for everyday life, further study, and the modern workplace. Unlike traditional academic teaching, this profession centers on developing core competencies that directly apply to real-world scenarios, making it a highly impactful role for those passionate about transforming lives through education.

Professionals in this role typically work with a diverse range of learners, including young people aged 16-24, adults returning to education, individuals with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), and those who may have previously disengaged from formal learning. The primary responsibility is to deliver structured lessons across Entry Levels 1-3 and Levels 1-2 in Functional Skills qualifications. Tutors design and implement engaging schemes of work, create differentiated lesson plans, and utilize innovative teaching methods to cater to varied learning styles and needs. A significant aspect of the job involves conducting initial and ongoing assessments to accurately gauge each learner’s starting point, setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) targets, and meticulously tracking progress to ensure timely achievement of qualifications.

Common responsibilities extend beyond direct instruction. Functional Skills Tutors are deeply involved in pastoral care, building positive, trusting relationships with learners who often face complex challenges such as learning differences, behavioral issues, or social communication difficulties. They manage classroom behavior effectively, embed safeguarding and Prevent duty principles into their practice, and collaborate closely with support staff, quality assurance teams, and external agencies. Administrative duties include maintaining accurate records, preparing learners for examinations, participating in curriculum review and standardization meetings, and undertaking continuous professional development (CPD) to stay current with educational frameworks and best practices. Many tutors also organize enrichment activities, trips, and events to contextualize learning and boost learner engagement.

Typical skills and requirements for this profession include a recognized teaching qualification such as PTLLS, DTLLS, Cert Ed, or PGCE, alongside a strong command of the subject area—typically a GCSE at grade C/4 or above or a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in the relevant subject. An assessor qualification is often essential. Crucially, successful candidates possess exceptional patience, adaptability, and resilience. They must be confident in differentiating instruction for learners with high and diverse needs, including those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and global developmental delay. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills are non-negotiable, as is a genuine commitment to helping vulnerable or disadvantaged individuals unlock their potential. Experience working with learners who have learning differences or special educational needs is highly valued. Ultimately, Functional Skills Tutor jobs offer a unique blend of academic instruction, personal development, and social impact, making them ideal for educators seeking a deeply fulfilling and dynamic career.
