Explore high-level leadership jobs in healthcare as an Executive Director, Chief of Advanced Practice. This senior executive role is the pinnacle of leadership for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), which include Nurse Practitioners (NPs), Physician Assistants (PAs), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), and other advanced clinicians. Professionals in these jobs serve as the system-wide strategic leader, responsible for the overarching vision, professional development, and operational excellence of the entire APP workforce within a healthcare organization, typically a large hospital system, academic medical center, or integrated delivery network. The core mission of an Executive Director, Chief of Advanced Practice is to elevate the role, impact, and integration of APPs. This involves providing executive leadership and organizational oversight to ensure APPs practice at the top of their license and education. A primary responsibility is crafting and executing a strategic plan for the advancement of APP practice across both inpatient and outpatient settings. This leader is accountable for the professional growth, recruitment, retention, and career development of all APPs, often establishing robust mentorship, onboarding, and continuing education programs. Operationally, the Chief drives performance and quality improvement initiatives, optimizing APP workflows to enhance patient care delivery, access, and outcomes. A critical aspect of the role is serving as the key liaison and fostering collaborative relationships with executive leadership, physicians, nursing administration, and other stakeholders to align APP functions with the organization's strategic objectives. This includes advocating for APPs at the highest levels of governance. Furthermore, the role carries significant responsibility for ensuring system-wide compliance with all state and federal regulations, scope of practice acts, credentialing standards, and billing practices pertinent to advanced practice professions. Typical requirements for these executive jobs include an advanced clinical degree (e.g., Master's or Doctorate in Nursing, Physician Assistant studies, or a related health field) and an active, unrestricted license and national certification as an NP, PA, or CRNA. Candidates must possess extensive clinical experience as an APP, often 10+ years, coupled with 5+ years of progressive leadership and management experience, preferably within a complex healthcare environment. Essential skills include visionary strategic thinking, financial and operational acumen, exceptional communication and influence skills, and a demonstrated ability to lead change and inspire a large, diverse group of professional clinicians.
