A significant part of the role is focused on ensuring data adheres to international standards, such as Darwin Core, to enable seamless integration with major global biodiversity platforms like the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and the Ocean Biodiversity Information Facility (OBIS). This ensures data is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR), a cornerstone principle of modern scientific data management. Common responsibilities for these specialists include designing and optimizing ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) workflows, ensuring version control and full reproducibility of all analyses. They are responsible for data quality control, identifying and rectifying anomalies or biases within datasets. Furthermore, they often develop and provide training and documentation on best practices for eDNA data handling to scientific teams and stakeholders, bridging the gap between field ecologists and data infrastructure.
