About the Class 2 HGV Tanker Driver role

A Class 2 HGV Tanker Driver plays a critical role in the logistics and supply chain industry, specializing in the safe and efficient transportation of bulk liquids and powders. These professionals are responsible for operating heavy goods vehicles with a maximum authorized mass (MAM) of over 3,500 kilograms but not exceeding 32,000 kilograms, typically pulling a rigid chassis fitted with a specialized tanker trailer. The primary function of these jobs is to collect and deliver a wide variety of substances—such as petroleum products, chemicals, milk, water, beer, food-grade oils, or cement—from depots, refineries, or production plants directly to customers, filling stations, factories, or storage facilities.

Day-to-day responsibilities for a Class 2 HGV Tanker Driver extend far beyond simply driving. Before departure, drivers must conduct thorough pre-trip inspections of both the vehicle and the tanker unit, checking for leaks, tire pressure, lights, brakes, and ensuring all safety equipment is functional. Loading and unloading are core duties that require specialized knowledge. Drivers must safely connect hoses, operate pumps and valves, and monitor gauges to prevent overfilling or spillage. They are also responsible for accurately measuring and recording the quantity of product loaded and delivered, often using dipsticks, flow meters, or electronic monitoring systems. Strict adherence to health and safety regulations, including handling hazardous materials under ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) guidelines, is paramount. This involves wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, following emergency procedures, and maintaining secure load compartments.

Typical skills and requirements for these jobs include holding a valid Category C (Class 2) HGV licence, a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), and a current ADR tanker certificate for the specific classes of dangerous goods being transported. Employers generally seek candidates with excellent driving records, strong spatial awareness, and the ability to reverse and manoeuvre large vehicles in tight spaces. Physical fitness is often necessary for handling heavy hoses and climbing onto tankers. Key personal attributes include reliability, punctuality, and a meticulous attention to detail. Many roles also require excellent customer service skills, as drivers frequently interact with clients and site personnel. While previous multi-drop experience is valued, many companies provide comprehensive training on specific product handling and depot procedures. Ultimately, Class 2 HGV Tanker Driver positions demand a unique blend of driving expertise, technical knowledge, and a strong commitment to safety, making them a vital and rewarding career path within the transport and logistics sector.
